"We were still strong on psychology of course. We even had a plaque put over the tunnel that takes the players from dressing rooms to the pitch. Our maintenance foreman, Bert Johnson, had it painted, white letters on a red background: THIS IS ANFIELD. A form of intimidation.
Newcastle United came one day and their players were in good spirits. I couldn’t understand it, because they never won any games at our ground. Joe Harvey was at the top of the steps leading down to the tunnel and the players were making their way out: John Tudor, Bob Moncur, and the rest. As Malcolm Macdonald came alongside Joe, he pointed at the plaque and said, ‘Joe, we are in the right ground.’
I said, ‘You’ll soon bloody find out you’re in the right ground, son!’ - only the words were stronger than that.
We beat Newcastle 5-0 that day."
